Paul
Mise-en-scene
How is sound used in the opening two minutes?
In the opening 2 minutes it’s an exiting energetic song which could suggest there both fun people. When they meet Adam shadowchild it plays some sort of magical music which suggests hes a big deal to them and is famous, they say "hes the coolest man in the world".They proceed to talk about a picture of an alien with some extra terresrrial music.
Cinematography scene
In the space man ball scene there are shots that look down on Paul from the kid , so we see a comparison between Paul and the kid, because of Paul being looked down on by the boy it shows us how small Paul really is. Mid way through the scene Paul has to pose as an alien in a comic shop dressed as a cow boy , this scene is comedic because the investigators walk in and he pretends to be a statue. The mid shot of standing in the centre in the room is great because it shows how obvious it is to see him. We see Clive talking to the shop owner and we see the investigator looking at Paul and how real it looks , this close up shows Clives facial expressions worried about the guy behind
The investigator has to leave but before he goes he pretends to pull a gun on Paul and we get a close up of Paul’s face with sweat coming down his face which adds a comedic effect.
Todorovs narrative theory applied to Paul
Disruption- They are driving and they come across Paul the alien.
Realisation-A Top secret organisation know Paul is on earth and try to find him and Clive and Graeme try to protect him and save him.
New equilibrium- Graeme is with the lady he met on the crazy adventure and they still go to comic con.
What genre is Paul
Paul is a Sci-fi and a comedy in my opinion because there are lots of funny scenes but also because Paul is an Alien who landed on earth .
Final thoughts
In my opinion the film is really good because it made me laugh but also had a really good story line to it. It wasn’t too long and we saw the characters relationship with each other develop a lot, out of 10 I would give this film an 8 and would recommend it as a film to watch.
