Its a linear narrative film and starts out with an opening shot of Ferris's house(the protaganist) which is a fairly big house which suggests the wealth or what kind of neighbourhood he lives in. It catches the audiences attention very quickly because Ferris talks to the viewer by looking down the camera and gives them tips on how to skip school and lie to your parents. By talking directly to us it really catches our attention because it feels like he is talking to us. He comes off as a very likeable and witty person to the audience which makes us invested on his day. Its set in the 80s and we can see this through mis-en-scene(hair and make-up and costume) and also the text aesthetic to open the film is very simplistic. Make-up in the 80s was very bright and colourful so from seeing the mum and sister it further shows that its set in the 80s.
From Ferris letting us know how to skip school it implies that hes a bad kid and doesn't care very much about his education. Through the way that hes young and very likeable and funny we as an audience can infer that its a comedy/teen film. On the tv we see how old it is suggesting its the 80s aswell. There is a medium shot of ferris opening the blinds after he completes being able to stay at home and this shot from outside the house shows that he is now relaxed and doesn't need to stress.Him taking a deep breath shows that all his stress was relieved and has now had the weight lifted off his chest.
The breakfast club
The song dont you instantly establishes the time of the film or when it was set being the 80s.
This can suggest that there will be bmxs, oldschool clothing etc.
The hair styles of the characters like claire is an 80s aesthetic style being wavy and fairly short.
This also further tells you its in the 80s.
The wide shot of the school suggest thats the film will be set in an American highschhol and about the students.
There are a few close ups on props for example the locker with spray paint on. This could suggest the school isnt great with behavior.
The opening monolog makes the audience wonder what they are doing in detention on a satarday and further more what did they do to be there.
This draws the attention from the audience making us want to carry on watching.
Seeing all the teens coming into school in different ways introduces and gives off first impressions.
This can suggest to the audience what type of people they are and if they should be there or not. By them speaking with their parents it implies if they have parents that are strict or layed back.
Seeing how they chat with their parents also can suggests if they are polite or not or if their relationship
with their parents is good.
Claire is the perfect example, she clearly doesnt think she should be there and and you can suggest she is a bit of a snob and has money.
Her saying "i cant belive you cant get me out of this" suggests that she relies on her dad alot, isnt independant and cant take responsibilty.
When being introduced to the characters we always get a medium shot of them and what theyre wearing.
Their costumes (mise-en-scene) shows very strereo typical types of high school students who have their own roles("jocks", "bad boy", "The goth girl" , "teachers pet" etc.
When being introduced to John Bender hes clearly a unique character and the audience begin to question him.
Unlike the other students he enters almost being hit by a car and he doesnt seem to have anyone with him like parents like others.
This makes me question what his home life may be like and shows he clearly doesnt care.
Project X
Some context
Project X is about a few friends that are considered as the streotypical "losers" who decide to throw a huge party alot bigger than normal parties and invite their whole year and become popular.
It gets out of hand and the party is shown on the news.
Project x has a non-linear narrative and the end is the beginning. The opening scene is the day of school after the party happened. The opening shot is filmed on a hand held camera, this gives off the effect that we are with the group of friends and the audience feel like they are in the groups shoes.
This lets the audince see the perspective from the friends as they walk through the halls.
The audience instantly get a mid shot of a broken car turning up with a guy in.
This suggests to the audience that hes a main character. The broken car leads the audience to question what happened to the car and is there a story behind it.
Through mise-en-scene we can see that they look like the streotypes of geeks/losers. JB (the guy with the curly hair) is wearing baggy clothes, wears glasses, messy hair and is overweight.
This has all the connotaions of a stereotypical "geek" in films. We get close ups usually to show emotion, shwoing the boys faces while walking through the halls. Them smurking and looking at each other smiling is showing their relisation that everyone is talking about them and that they are now popular after what happened at the party the night before. This suggests to the audience how great and crazy the party was for them going from geeks to being the most popular people.
After a little bit of the time after he gets out of the car as they walk through the halls non-diagetic sound starts and the music is used for them showing the realisation of the guys.
The music is tense and its implying to the audience that they are heros for the party that they threw.
Diagetic sounds like students cheering is there for further suggesting that the guys are heros.
As an audience we learn that this party must of been something special since they are built up so much as a group. Throguh the mise-en-scene the clothes that they are wearing is what most 2000s teens would wear suggesting its set in the 2000s.
Student made openig scenes
“Ava” (Award Winning Student Film)
The first 2 minutes and 50 seconds is what i will be talking about.
It begins with non-diagetic sound, the music it begins with is very 80s themed music mainly because of the instuments played. This implies that the film is set in the 80s. Through the mise-en-scene (props) in the begininning we see a picture of a kid holding a computer smiling with glasses. This implies he will be the main character because it was shown at the very beginning. The computer(prop) implies hes the stereotypical "technology geek". Him holding the computer suggests he has a love for computers.
Through cinematography We get close up shots on the boys clothes(mise-en-scene) this is to suggest what type of person he is. He is wearing a tie which suggests hes trying to look smart and a very creased t shirt suggesting he doesnt care too much about his appearence. Compared to most teens his clothes are very unique compared to watch a normal teen casually wears. The close up shot on the sticky note with the girls number makes the audience feel intreuged and to want to find out who is victoria and what connection does he have with her. This keeps the audience watching to find out more Props like the oldschool apple computer further tells us the time the film is most likely set being the 80s. Through sound and dialogue we can infer on his date he isnt listening becuase its muffled sound and the close ups on his face is showing he has no interest. When the girl says the word "apple" the boy instrantly thinks about apple computers and the logo and sound effect pops up. Through the cinematography of looking over his shoulder and the girl being blurry and out of focus it suggets he isnt focused on her and is more exited about apple. This implies that hes a nerd and is addicted to his computer. Through cinematography we learn that he is addicted to and in love with his computer. The shot where he draws a love heart on the window shows that hes trapped and away from his computer and also shows that he cant spend alot of time without his computer without missing it too much.
SLACKER - High School Short Film
Throughout the beginning through cinematography we only get close ups on both characters which look about 16. We only get close ups on there faces until 1 minute 18. The reason for this is to build up where the guy brought his girl friend that is so bad that she is breaking up with him. We then get medium shots of the setting. This is then the big reveal of where he bought her which looks like ikea or just a furnature store. This creates the film to have a little bit of extra comedy to keep the audience entertained and to keep watching and to stay enganged. The guy genuinly seemed like he was trying which makes the audience question him as a person. Through the mise-en-scene the film looks like its set in the 90s/2000s. Through what they are wearing the costume looks very like what kids would wear in those times. The coventions of comedy and teen are there becuase of the funny scenes and the film is set in a high school and called a "highschool short film". The close up and wide shot of the class tells the audience its set in a school and the wide shot lets us see school posters and the students and what they are wearing. The white board is another indication of the year that the film is based, in 2021 pretty much most classes have alot better technology and dont use a white board. This further implies that its set in 1990s/2000s. The close ups around his room suggest the film is called "slacker" because through the cinematography and mise-en-scene like props he is the "slacker" of the film and lazy. A close up showing his to do list shows a power point due the next day showing he is leaving it to the last minute and is lazy and doesnt care about his education.

Paul Mise-en-scene Clive Gollins played by Nick Frost wears a plain black t shirt with a lighting bolt on it , this shows he might be a bit of a geek and he’s over weight which suggests he sits down most of the time and is lazy. He has long hair and doesn’t have a style to it which shows the audience he doesn’t care about how he looks to others. How is sound used in the opening two minutes?
